Gonaives: One year after the Cyclones

DSCN6657.JPGThanks to the drinking water produced by Aquassistance’s mobile water treatment plants, 12,000 Haitian children received a daily meal during 11 months in the canteens managed by ACF.

In September 2008, Aquassistance intervened in Haiti together with “Action contre la Faim” (ACF) in the Gonaives region, after devastation caused by several cyclones. Five tons of equipment were sent and an Aquassistance team was involved in setting it up and training staff to exploit it.

One year later, Pierre-Yves Rochat, WASH (Water Sanitation Hygiene) advisor at ACF, gives us some news from Gonaives:

“The biggest plmapou 1 bis.JPGant (5m3/h) worked until June 2009 and ensured water supply in 21 canteens which helped about 12,000 children receiving one meal every day.

Equipment has been cleaned, packaged and stored so that it may serve in case of a new emergency.”

Because of the geographical position of the island, cyclones undeniably represent a recurring problem for Haiti. Their impact is, moreover, worsened by deforestation. Aquassistance and ACF already worked together in 2004 in this region and are ready to collaborate once more in case of a new disaster.
